MACLAURIN
MACLAURIN, COLIN & MURDOCH, PATRICK - AN ACCOUNT OF SIR ISAAC NEWTON'S PHILOSOPHICAL DISCOVERIES, IN FOUR BOOKS London, J Nourse, 1775. Third edition, 8vo, half-title, 6 folding engraved plates (complete), 18th century brown calf, rebacked. Newton had great respect for Maclaurin's mathematical abilities, and he personally recommended him for a professorship at the University of Edinburgh. Here, MacLaurin discusses Newton's method of investigation and of 'philosophizing', as well as his discoveries, and begins with a long history of natural philosophy since the ancients, in which he again asserts the importance for religion of sound natural philosophy.
