1578 GENEVA/'BREECHES' BIBLE - THE BIBLE Translated according to the Ebrew and Greeke, and conferred with the best translations in diuers languages. [London, Christopher Barker, 1578]. Folio, lacking general title, the New Testament title within an elaborate woodcut frame is present and dated 1578, lacking some prelim leaves and others are repaired with some loss, the Apocrypha has separate foliation and register, "The Newe Testament of our Lord Iesus Christ" has separate foliation and register with some repairs and slight loss from folio 79 onwards, woodcut maps and other woodcuts in the text, bound in 18th century reversed calf, upper board detached and lower hinge also weak, housed in a solander box. The Geneva version, translated by William Whittingham, Anthony Gilby, Thomas Sampson, and perhaps others. In the Breeches Bible, Genesis Chapter III Verse 7 reads: "Then the eies of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked, and they sewed figge tree leaves together, and made themselves breeches." In the King James Version of 1611, "breeches" was changed to "aprons". Sold w.a.f. Provenance: St John's College, Nottingham
