THE PAPERS OF ALFRED CHARLES ASHTON WHEN CHIEF OF PATENTS BRANCH OF THE BRITISH AIR COMMISSION, WASHINGTON DC, APRIL 1944-JULY 1946 comprising mostly official correspondence, memoranda, telegrams and printed ephemera, filing holes (95 approx)A C Ashton spent about eighteen months in Washington having previously worked for the Ministry of Aircraft Production. As World War II drew to a close he was heavily involved in negotiating fees for the post war use by the Americans of technical information that had been made freely available for the duration of the war. This included the agreement reached at the conclusion of the 'Japanese War' for the Americans continued use of Power Jet Limited's technology, the company established by the inventor of the jet engine Sir Frank Whittle (1907-1996) and nationalised in 1944.
