SOUTHWELL, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. THE WORLD WAR ONE AUTOGRAPH ALBUM OF MISS G M GIBBS, A VAD NURSE AT BURGAGE MANOR filled with about seventy contributions or illustrations by convalescent soldiers and one able seaman, often of a sentimental or evocative nature including one who had been injured on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916, 14 x 18cm, green morocco worn, slightly loose, 1915-17Burgage Manor, once the home of Lord Byron, opened as a military hospital in April 1915. It was staffed by the Voluntary Aid Detachment led by Miss E M Small, OBE. The present album includes a number of references to Southwell and Burgage Manor such as that of one young soldier who wrote in 1917 "I will remember Burgage Manor/and the elm trees straight and tall/but the girl who took my photo/I will remember best of all."
