A COALPORT DESSERT SERVICE, PAINTED BY THOMAS DIXON, C1840 a comport with pierced handles 21cm h, 4/514 or umarked (17)Thomas Dixon spent his entire career at Coalport and according to Geoffrey Godden "was responsible for most of the best flower painting... from about 1820 or before, until the 1870s." Pattern 5/514 is one of those specifically allocated to Dixon in the factory's pattern books. Representative pieces from a similarly fine Coalport dessert service of the 1835-40 period, with the same ground colour, are illustrated Godden (G A), Coalport and Coalbrookdale Porcelains, 1970, col plt V.
