ATTRIBUTED TO A LADY OF THE CHOLMELEY FAMILEY, EARLY 19TH CENTURY CONTINENTAL LANDSCAPE WITH A FISHERMAN ON A RIVERSIDE PATH BY A RUINED TOWER watercolour, 21.5 x 32.5cmProvenance: By descent in the Cholmeley family to William Henry Fairfax-Cholmeley (1872-1939) [see lot 873], thence by descent to the present vendor. John Sell Cotman (1782-1842) was on intimate terms with the Cholmeley family, with whom he stayed on a number of occasions at Brandsby Hall. When there he executed his remarkable Greta watercolours and gave drawing lessons to Mrs Chomeley and her daughters.
