A VICTORIAN PAINTED WOOD MILITARY TRUNCHEON, DATED 1868 painted in polychrome with crown, VR cipher and on a scarlet cartouche R.G.F. 1868, 44cmThe letters RGF denote the Royal Gun Factory at Woolwich Arsenal. The factory was a continuation of the Royal Brass Foundry which was renamed in 1855. The truncheon was probably made in response to the Fenian Rising of 1867.
