WORLD WAR ONE. THE WAKEFIELD GOLD MEDAL FOR THE DESTRUCTION OF ZEPPELIN L15 engraved GUNNER DUNSTAN, 9ct, hallmarked Birmingham 1916, scroll suspenderZeppelin L15 was hit by anti-aircraft fire from the Purfleet Ranges. All but one of the crew were rescued after it crashed into the sea off Margate. At his own expense Sir Charles Wakefield commissioned the award of commemorative gold medals to the anti-aircraft crews concerned. Charles Cheers Wakefield, subsequently Viscount Wakefield of Hythe (1859-1941) founded C C Wakefield & Co, the manufacturer of Castrol lubricants.
