A SCOTTISH VICTORIAN WINDSOR CHAIR
A SCOTTISH VICTORIAN WINDSOR CHAIR, AYRSHIRE, DARVEL OR NEWMILNS, SECOND HALF 19TH C of American birch with ash lap jointed bow and comb rail, retaining much of the original red stain, 110cm hWith its distinctive appearance, including a sharply raked back when viewed in profile, production of such chairs seems to have been limited to the small lowland towns of Darvel and Newmilns. Turned chairs are rare in Scottish vernacular furniture where the tradition for joined, primitive fireside chairs and seats predominated until a surprisingly late period. A closely similar chair is illustrated Cotton (B D), Scottish Vernacular Furniture 2008, fig 362.
