A DERBY ARMORIAL PLATE

A DERBY ARMORIAL PLATE, C1821 enamelled with the arms of Gresley quartering those of Wastney with Bowyer in pretence, in chinoiserie border with crest, 22.5cm diam, red printed circular BLOOR DERBY mark, 10 and 24 in redA Derby replacement for the Chinese armorial service c1735 commissioned by Sir Thomas Gresley 4th Baronet of Drakelow. He married in 1719 Dorothy co-heir of Sir William Bowyer, Bt. The present plate is likely to have been one of several made at the same time as the Derby service for Sir Roger Gresley, 8th Baronet who married in 1821 Sophia Catherine Coventry, daughter of the 7th Earl of Coventry.
