†TREVOR OWEN MAKINSON (B 1906) SAM'S BOOTS signed and dated Dec 1943, oil on panel, 28 x 38cmAccording to the label on the backboard, the title is derived from an incident following the evacuation from the beaches of Dunkirk in 1940: "Sam's Boots - part of Hereford Art School was used for cleaning rifles after the Dunkirk incident and Sam was one of the soldiers detailed for this work. He left these boots behind him: they had previously been hundreds of miles through Belgium and returned home via Dunkirk."
