A VICTORIAN GOTHIC OAK CHOIR DESK, C1856-1878 with open arcaded front with foliate carved ends, 116cm h; 38 x 286cmProvenance: St Mary's Church, Melton Mowbray.St Mary's was restored by Sir George Gilbert Scott, RA (1811-1878) between 1856 and 1878. Scott was acquainted with the vicar of St Mary's the Revd. W M Colles with whom he shared an interest in archeology. The present particularly fine poppy-head bench ends are closely comparable with those installed by Scott's restoration of All Saints, Oakham, 1857-8.
