†WILLIAM JAMES SMITH, FRIBA (1893-1979) PROPOSED GOLF CLUB HOUSE signed and inscribed, signed and inscribed again with the title and artist's address 3 Ferngrove Avenue [Glasgow] on the exhibition label on the backboard, watercolour, 24.5 x 35cmExhibited: Glasgow Art Club (1937).The Glasgow architect W J Smith studied architecture at Glasgow School of Art in the years leading up to World War One. Smith was an early disciple of Charles Rennie Mackintosh whom he knew well and whose genius he revered. Frequenting Mackintosh's offices he was able to acquire a number of important examples of furniture for very little. After his death several of his Mackintosh pieces were acquired by amongst other museums the Hunterian Art Gallery, Glasgow. Smith was appointed Professor of Architecture at Glasgow School of Art in 1942.
