AN ENGLISH BRASS SIMPLE MICROSCOPE, GEORGE LINDSAY, LONDON, NO 16, DATED 1742 [1743] with hinged, fretted bracket, hinged stage, focusing lever and on the edge of the base plate a silver divided strip numbered 1-7 and secured by two screws, a slide with objectives 2, 3 & 4 behind the eye-cup, the front plate with silvered tablet engraved Geo Lindsay inv & fec, stamped with the serial number 16 behind the eyepiece and under the base plate 1742Lindsay's patent (No 588) for a 'Portable Microscope' was granted on 17 February 1743, the apparent discrepancy in the date being due to the old style calendar. An identical example bearing serial number 22 and complete with all the accessories is illustrated Turner G L'E, The Great Age of the Microscope 1989, No 279.
