The citation for the DCM reads: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a raid on enemy trenches. He led his men with the utmost dash and when his party was fired on from a concrete dug-out he rushed to the entrance, bayoneted two of the enemy and bombed four who were inside, killing them all. He displayed great gallantry and presence of mind at a critical moment.
