A FINE ANGLO-INDIAN GOLD 'SWAMI STYLE' BRACELET, MADRAS, ATTRIBUTED TO P ORR & SONS, C1880 of tapered cone form (kadakam) and six hinged alto-relievo repoussé box-constructed panels very finely chased with deities from the Hindu pantheon, 7cm, unmarked, 75g, maroon morocco triptych case signed for James Crichton & Co, Edinburgh The firm of P Orr & Sons was established in 1849 and such was the demand for its beautifully handmade gold and silver jewellery during the British Raj that at the height of its success it employed 600 Indian artisans. In its catalogue of 1876 it claimed to be "The pioneer manufacturing firm in India." combining as it did, highly skilled native craftsmen and a European style of manufacture.
