SCHEHERAZADE. A RARE ALBUM OF THIRTEEN [OF SIXTEEN] SILK HANDKERCHIEFS DESIGNED BY GEORGE SHERINGHAM FOR SEFTON FABRICS, C1918 stitched pictorial limp card wrappers with pochoir title, 31 x 34cmThe striking bold 'modern' designs of this rare group of handkerchiefs follow an advertisement of May 1918 in which the Belfast manufacturer Sefton Fabrics announced that it had invited well-known artists, including 'Miss Fish' to design textiles. Walter Sefton had married, in March 1918 the designer (and creator of 'Eve') Anne Harriet Fish who, at 28 was some 17 years his junior. Her own design for a fan inspired by the Russian ballet Scheherazade was illustrated in The Tatler, 1 January 1919.
