BYRON SILVER. A GEORGE III GADROONED OGEE SAUCE BOAT Byron crest
BYRON SILVER. A GEORGE III GADROONED OGEE SAUCE BOAT Byron crest, 14cm h, maker WS, probably William Skeen, London 1764, 16ozs A note on provenance: Given the date of 1764, the present sauce boat was almost certainly supplied to William, 'The Wicked' 5th Lord Byron (1722-1798), Admiral John 'Foulweather Jack' Byron (1723-1786) or either of their two brothers. Since the assay (date) letter changes each year on 29th May it must have been hallmarked between June 1764 and May 1765. The absence of definitive evidence does not preclude the tantalising possibility therefore that this good quality London made rococo silver sauce boat was commissioned by the 'Wicked Lord' at around the very time he infamously killed his kinsman and neighbour William Chaworth in a drunken duel fought with swords in a room at the 'Star and Garter' Inn, London on January 26, 1765.
